Microsoft offers a very strong set of tools for sharing documents and data in your organization and for creating Intranet solutions. These tools include SharePoint Services and SharePoint Server 2007... OK the names are confusing! Let’s try for some clarity:
Windows SharePoint Services
[SharePoint Services was until recently called SharePoint Team services]
Windows SharePoint Services is included with Windows Server 2003 – no cost. So you almost surely have it in-house already!
What can you do with SharePoint Services? Basically you can setup internal web pages - intranet pages if you will –on which you can share documents and other information using built-in templates and taking advantage to integration with Office. It includes search, work flow, rights management, administration, and deployment features.
Windows SharePoint Server
[SharePoint Server was until recently called SharePoint Portal Server]
SharePoint Server adds a lot of functionality to the built-in SharePoint Services –though it starts with the same basic function – you can build internal web pages and share documents and information with others in your firm, department, team, etc. SharePoint Server is separate software that you purchase along with licenses for every user.
SharePoint Server 2007 connects sites, people, and business processes—facilitating knowledge sharing with enterprise-wide functionality for records management, search, workflow, portals, personalized sites, and more.
Office SharePoint Server 2007 extends the capabilities of Windows SharePoint Services by providing highly flexible organization and management tools for SharePoint sites, and by making it possible for teams to publish information to the entire organization.
SharePoint Server includes electronic forms, personal web site pages, shared Excel spreadsheet integrations, Search of pages and documents, Workflow setup, and extranet access tools.
